The Directorate of Secondary Education is responsible for imparting knowledge, inculcating scientific temper and developing skills to face the socio-economic life situations after their studies. Secondary Education caters to the needs of children in the age group of 14 – 18 and bridges the Elementary Education and the Collegiate Education. The Secondary Education comprises Standards IX and X and the Higher Secondary Education have Standards XI and XII. At the State level Director of School Education is the administrative officer for the secondary school system. There are Joint Directors for each of the components of the secondary education administration. Each Revenue district is headed by a Chief Educational Officer. The State is divided into 64 Educational Districts which are administered by 64 District Educational Officers. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||

| There are schools with Standards ranging from VI to X; such schools are called High Schools under the state Board of Secondary Education. There are Matriculation, Oriental and CBSE Schools which offer secondary education. There are 5046 Secondary/High Schools in the state. The +2 pattern of education is offered under the Higher Secondary Education System in Tamil Nadu. The Higher Secondary Schools have classes from VI to XII. There are 4536 Higher Secondary Schools.
